Thames Ridge Scouts – Growth Champions
Oxfordshire Scouts have recorded another year of growth according to the latest annual membership figures released this month.  Thames Ridge Scout District has enjoyed another year of growth,  increasing the number of youth members from 1044 to 1147 and achieving a Growth Champions award from the Scout County.  All of those young people, and the adults who support them are now enjoying adventure and learning valuable skills for life.

This exciting new event is a chance for all adults in Thames Ridge Scouts to get together to meet other volunteers in Scouting, to learn from them and to share ideas.
The morning session will be focused on Group Executive members, looking at your responsibilities as a Trustee (including GDPR) and providing an opportunity for faciliated discussions with other people in your role.
The afternoon session is targeted at leaders, assistant leaders and sectional assistants from all sections. We plan to have sessions on

Abingdon Invaded by 420 Scouts
Abingdon found itself invaded by Dragons on Sunday the 22nd of April for the local Scouts to celebrate St George’s the Patron Saint of Scouting. Some 420 young people aged 6-25 were challenged to get to Abingdon in an unusual way and arrived on foot, by boat, by bus, by train, and even more creatively, by dragon, unicorn or aeroplane. They were supported by 120 adults, including many parents as well as leaders.

Entry fee: £1 per runner (payable at ‘Booking-In’ point)
Race Times: 
Beaver Scouts …. 6.30pm (Book in 6.00 to 6.15pm)
Cub Scouts ……… 7.00pm (Book in 6.30 to 6.45pm)

Well, hopefully it is, anyway – it would be nice if Winter Challenge can go ahead at the second attempt. But there are definitely signs of growth across the District: the results of the annual census are in, and we’re up to 1147 young people, a huge 9.9% growth on last year. That’s a fantastic reflection on the efforts you have all put in to provide a great programme and to offer Scouting to more and more young people – thank you!

The Scout and Guide Christmas Post is running again in Abingdon this year.  Post boxes are at 35 Ock Street, Christ Church, Waitrose and other sites. The cards will be delivered before Christmas Eve, for 25p per card, only to houses in Abingdon, Shippon and Radley.  The last date of posting is 17 December at 12 noon. You can save money on postage at the same time as supporting local Scouts and Guides.

Scouting now has the largest number of volunteers than we’ve had in our entire history! The annual Census figures are out and show us that there’s an incredible amount of volunteers in Scouting, but that with a sky-high waiting list for young people, we still need more.
Here’s a snapshot of the top facts and figures:
Total membership today is 618,000 – up by 7.8% from last year’s total of 573,943!
We’re in our twelfth year of membership growth and Scouting continues to be the largest co-educational youth movement in the UK. There …
